Our Origin & Our Promise.

You probably wonder what Northrå means.

Northrå is a breakdown of heritage. In Scandinavian folklore, a Rå is a powerful protective spirit of a land. There can be many. Different Rå can protect forests, mountains, oceans, marshes, etc.

Here at Northrå, we strive to protect the North; fighting climate change and Arctic destruction through purposeful, beautiful home essentials made with the practices of quality craftsmanship. Not only for our customers, but for our world. Because we have seen what happens when sustainability is given the back burner, second-priority approach, and we want it to never happen again.

Founded when the proud owner, Cameron, witnessed illegal logging in the forest one day during an operation to cut select and marked old-growth hardwoods at the end of their life, it became clear that logging isn't a perfect system. Logging can be done with extremely ill practices, but love of woodworking doesn't have to contribute.

Our purpose is to do right by the forest. To do right by the trees that make it, the wildlife that call it home, and the world we all share. That is why for each sale made of our handmade pieces, Northrå donates 10% of profit to OneTreePlanted.

However, the effort does not stop there. If you want to know more, our FAQ describes further how we strive to be the greenest woodworking business in the world. We appreciate each customer who trusts our products and supports us in our effort to make a better world, and promise you will love your products by Northrå.

Frequently asked questions

How can woodworking be sustainable?

Here at Northrå, we source over 75% of our lumber from local sawyers who we know source wood from local arborists, and kiln dry on-site with sustainable practices.

We also donate to plant far more trees than we use the lumber of; in essence making it for each tree's wood used, we plant anywhere from tens to hundreds of trees depending on the products sold.

All products are finished with 100% American grown & bottled Hemp Oil; an unprecedentedly sustainable method, which creates a truly fine finish & improves durability of our products for customers.

Does Northrå use sustainable shipping?

Northrå is extremely proud to be among the first wooden lifestyle brands to impart carbon-neutral shipping on all shipments. Ensuring the transit of products is performed in an eco-friendly manner does not only mitigate logistical emissions, but also improves demand on shippers to expand their eco-friendly practices.

Does Northrå use environmental banking?

We are extremely proud to be quite possibly the first woodworking brand in the practice of sustainable banking. Northrå H&T proudly uses Climate First Bank, a younger US institution publicly committed to never fossil fuel lending, and focusing on renewable energy development. While the vast majority of banks participate in fossil fuel lending, we stand to be part of something better.

This practice is one we are extremely proud to support, as woodworking can be rather energy intensive. With CFB, each sale made not only supports reforestation; it also supports clean energy development, both at home and abroad, to make the world's grids cleaner for all.

Where are products manufactured?

Our handmade products are manufactured locally, with all handmade products being made in our woodshop. Our wall art is made in partnership with printing companies to ensure fine final prints, and quality through expertise & experience for our customers.

We carefully select our manufacturing partners to ensure our Wall Art products are high quality and a fair value for customers.

What are the sustainability goals?

At the time, our products here at Northrå are crafted in a local makerspace, or community workshop. This allows us a vast array of tools to create our pieces with pride for customers we are eternally grateful for.

The goals of Northrå H&T however are to expand our bases of sustainability. With enough support and patronage coupled with improvement over time in our sustainability efforts, the dream of our owner Cameron is to create a fully owned woodshop. A space that not only produces fine works, but does so with 100% solar power, generated on-site with battery reserve, to have clean energy be behind our tools.

Any and all purchases get us towards that goal of making beautiful woodcraft with sustainable practices and systems, from 100% clean energy. All customers are not only appreciated, but truly valued, and we strive to earn our solar powered goals with your satisfaction.
